Mexican Curiosity

This weekend (after watching ballet folklorico videos for two hours) I decided it was time for me to learn about the history of Mexico. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit that I had zero clue about any significant event in mexican history. I grabbed a couple of books at the Palos Verdes library and read in one of their study rooms for 3 hours. I won’t go into a history lecture but I can now say I know at least the basics of the Mexican-American war, the Mexican Revolution and who Benito Juarez, Pancho Villa and Lazaro Cardenas are. I’d call that a successful afternoon of learning!

I was able to get tickets to LA Opera’s performance of Carmen this week and had a lovely evening. The performance was in downtown LA at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and conducted by the legendary Placido Domingo. While it wasn’t the best opera I’ve ever been to, I was completely blown away by the gorgeous chandeliers that decorated the pavilion.

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about visiting the South. I’ve always had a fascination with it’s plantations and deep traditional heritage but lately it’s been something that consistently creeps into my thoughts. Could this finally be the year I visit the American South? My soul certainly wants to, will my means allow for a visit? I sure hope so.
